Iran says vetoing a United Nations resolution demanding an immediate humanitarian cease-fire in Gaza shows Washington's "full complicity" in Israel's strikes against Gaza, calling them "regrettable crimes."
Nasser Kanaani, the spokesman for the country's foreign ministry, said during a regularly scheduled briefing in Tehran, the United States government had "demonstrated its full-fledged solidarity with the Zionist regime."
The U.S vetoed the U.N resolution Friday backed by almost all other Security Council members and dozens of other nations.
The vote in the 15-member council was 13-1, with the United Kingdom abstaining.
The isolated stand reflected a growing fracture between Washington and some of its closest allies over Israel’s monthslong bombardment of Gaza.
France and Japan were among those supporting the call for a cease-fire.
The U.S. also pushed through an emergency sale of over $100 million worth of tank ammunition to Israel.
Kanaani also said sufficient evidence existed proving a Swedish citizen undergoing trial in Iran was guilty.
Iran on Sunday held the first hearing for a Swedish citizen who was detained last year on charges of spying for Israel, media reported.
A report by Mizanonline.ir news website, which is affiliated with the country’s judiciary, said that the prosecutor accused the man who was identified as Johan Floderus of “having links with Israeli elements”.
Floderus is also accused of gathering information for Israel in the framework of projects through American, Israeli and European institutes that were active against the Islamic Republic of Iran.
The prosecutor said Floderus had traveled to Israel, worked with Swedish intelligence and transferred money to Iran for projects aimed to toppling its government.
He asked the judge to prosecute Floderus based on articles of Iranian law that carry penalties from six months to capital punishment.
