“Revival” video. This was my first time attempting to shoot a dance video clip with proper outfit, setting, camera man.
At that time I already moved to Berlin. With a friend, camera man Martin, we found this spectacular venue - abandoned wing of Beelitz heilstätten (hospital) that had a stunning piano there!?
.
6 am in the morning. With all the costumes and camera, we had to climb on a tree and get in though the broken window to get to this hall. We were very cautious obviously of being there. How did I play the music, you might wonder? Well, I almost didn’t. We filmed the dance in small parts. I knew the tune by heart. So I would listen to it, then put the phone on the piano on a super low level and dance that part for film.
.
I called it "Revival”. To me at that time it was something absolutely new that is re-born in a fusion of jazz traditions. Coming from few years of Flapper world, I was in that phase of searching for a fresh wave in my dance. I desperately needed to see if I can dance differently.
.
I found all the inspiration in music of Christian McBride and his Big Band recording "In a Hurry". Christian McBride is one of the most in demand, virtuoso bass player. Winner of 3 Grammy Awards. Great person. Inspiring musician and artist.
.
At that time bebop music seemed to me a revelation. Then and now I believe that jazz dance as jazz music has a true spirit of freedom, improvisation, constant innovation. Great to know the roots, the style of the Masters. Essential not to stop there and set off on a path to unlock your own unique style.
.
Music after mid 40's is considered to be "non-danceable" or known to actually "kill the dance". Well, music changes and dance can change with it. I wanted to show with my performance that you can dance to bebop, to contemporary jazz, to jazz bands and trios. Jazz, not only swing.
.
This is a big band music of today. My dance as the music itself portrays a mixture of tradition (authentic jazz, charleston, blues) and other influences from my dance experience.
