Pesto Bread Recipe | Braided basil bread | Vegan Pesto Babka

This pesto bread recipe is really easy and absolutely delicious. This is a braided basil bread that is similar to the Polish babka breads in shape but is a savory vegan babka. In this video I will show you how to make the bread dough, roll it out and fill it with your favorite pesto. At the end I also describe some variations you can make to this recipe for sweet or savory braided or twisted breads.

Ingredients:
500 g Strong Bread Flour or All Purpose Flour
10 g salt
10 g sugar
10 g active dry yeast
325 mL water
~ 1/2 cup or more of your favorite pesto

Add the flour and salt to a mixing bowl. In a separate bowl, combine sugar, yeast and water. Stir and let the yeast bloom for 10 minutes. Add the yeast water to the flour and knead by hand or with a stand mixture until smooth and elastic, about 5-10 minutes. Place in a large bowl and cover. Let rise 1 to 1.5 hours until doubled. Place the dough on a lightly floured board and roll it out into a large rectangle about 1/4 inch or 635 mm thick. Smear it with a thin layer of pesto or whatever your favorite filling is. Roll it tightly into a log and pinch the seam closed. Slice the dough in half lengthwise to reveal the layers. Overlap the two pieces in the middle keeping the layers upright as much as possible. Twist the dough together toward each end to make a twisted braid. Place on a parchment lined baking sheet. Cover and let rise for 30-45 minutes. Preheat oven to 475 °F or 250 °C. Bake for 15-20 minutes, turning part way through if your oven does not heat evenly, until the bread is browned. Let it cool and enjoy.
