The Lane Bryant Massacre

In 2008, five women were escorted to the back of a Lane Bryant store in Tinley Park, just outside Chicago, Illinois. Rhoda McFarland, the manager, dialed 911 and spoke a few clipped words to the dispatcher before hanging up. A few moments later, five women would be gunned down.

The Lane Bryant Shooting would be remembered as one of the worst unsolved mass shootings in the United States. Despite a quick police response, eyewitness, and captured audio, the gunman has continued to evade police. As of 2022, Lane Park Massacre is still unsolved.

On February 2nd, Rhoda McFarland arrived at the Lane Bryant store in the Brookside Marketplace to help a newer employee open the store.

A man arrived shortly after opening. He pretended to be a delivery man, carrying papers and a coffee cup. He spoke to the women at the register before wielding a Glock handgun and escorting the two employees and two customers to the back of the store. He robbed them of any cash and jewelry before taping their hands and feet with duct tape. He blindfolded them with undergarments from a nearby display.

He detained additional customers as they arrived, robbing them and directing them to the back with the others. One woman tried to resist, and he pistol-whipped her before restraining her.

He spent 40 minutes in the store before he started to act erratic and on edge. McFarland managed to phone the police with her Bluetooth headset, but the call was interrupted by the gunman. He would shoot McFarland in the forehead before shooting the others in the back of the head. One woman would survive by moving at the last second. This would be the part-time employee, and her name would never be released to the public for fear of reprisal from the killer.

The police responded within a minute, but the perpetrator had already fled the scene.

The survivor's description of the killer would be developed into a police sketch and circulated to the public. Additionally, clips of McFarland's 911 call would be released to the public. Additionally, the police confirmed that they had a shoeprint recovered from the scene, and they would allude to DNA from the suspect; however, it's uncertain if the sample was a workable size.

Security camera footage from a nearby Target was obtained by America's Most Wanted, and a NASA scientist was hired to enhance the footage. Two vehicles were identified at the scene at the time of the shooting; however, the resolution of the footage prevented identification of the vehicles or drivers.

The victims were Sarah Szafranski, Carrie Chiuso, Jennifer Bishop, Connie Woolfolk, and Rhoda McFarland.

Initially, police believed this was a botched robbery attempt of the Lane Bryant in Tinley Park. An unnamed source contacted the Chicago-Sun Times and revealed that the police believe the suspect intended to stay in the store and rob multiple customers as they entered. However, additional fringe theories have been proposed.

One of the strangest and most prominent is that the perpetrator was actually a woman mistaken for a man. Proponents of this theory point to the clothing, hairstyle, and hygiene of the suspect, as well as the feminine features in the face. They claim the audio from the 911 call was the result of the suspect pitching their voice.

Another theory is that the perpetrator was a convict who lived in the area at the time, Corey Frierson. Frierson had a history of robbery, evading arrest, and drug trafficking. Frierson committed other robberies in the area around this time, and his photographs resemble the police sketches.

In 2022, two new detectives have been assigned to the Tinley Park murders with the hopes of eventually solving this cold case.
