In this new series, I delve into the relevance for each of the various historical settings and contexts featured in METAL GEAR SOLID V: GROUND ZEROES / THE PHANTOM PAIN. We begin with examining 'Camp Omega' and its real world analogue, the infamous 'Camp X-Ray' inside the Naval Facility at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.
In GROUND ZEROES, Big Boss infiltrates a secret 'black site' on the Eastern tip of Cuba, which the game conspicuously neglects to name outright. The only name provided is for the makeshift, dog kennel like prison with open air cages, 'Camp Omega'.
Inside 'Camp Omega' and the wider base, so-called 'enemy combatants' renditioned from around the world, including from America, are held in a 'haven' outside all international treaties and laws. The main mission of 'Ground Zeroes' involves the rescue of two POWs in all but name, including one minor.
In this video, I discuss in great detail why 'Camp Omega' doubles as a veiled indictment not only of the notorious facility at Guantanamo Bay, but of the so-called Carceral State in America that, in the wake of 9/11, has rapidly seen the evaporation of concepts like human and civil rights, all in the name of security, zero risk, and 'law and order'.
