18th Ship for Southeast Asian Youth Program 1991 AECP Part 2/2

Music "Masdan Mo Ang Kapaligiran" by Asin.
"Agila: Haring Ibon" by Joey Ayala

PART 2 of 2
Participating Youth of the Ship for Southeast Asian Youth Program in 1991 performing their show as part of the Asian Exhibit and Cultural Performance day on board the M/S Nippon Maru. Traditionally each participating country (in that year Japan, Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei, Philippines) performs songs and dances during courtesy calls or dinners at each port of call. Before arrival at each port, each country presents an exhibit in the morning, and a performance in the evening. The 1991 contingent presented folk songs and dances beautifully woven into a story examining the Filipino identity. Two characters, both named Nitoy, depicting sadness and happiness, show the two sides to the Filipino--the fiesta, fun-loving, happy-go-lucky one and the serious one who has had to deal with natural calamities and building his country. The program's environmental awareness and education thrust is also in the story. Director Abet, patiently formed this show with the group, using simple conversational English, music by local artists, borrowed costumes, and props made by the group out of simple materials. Although one or two, including the director, have performed professionally before, majority of this group is composed of youth from varied sectors representing all regions of the Philippines. Please note that with the exception of people like Abet the director and Jeannie the conductor who went on to complete that course in UP Conservatory, these are non-professional singers/dancers. Participants aged 18-30 go through a strict selection process and are from very diverse fields. They are chosen for their ability to participate successfully in the Japan-sponsored youth program which aims to promote goodwill among ASEAN-member nations and Japan.

I just have to say...although shattering any idealism or illusions I had as a 21 year old about government/nationhood/bureaucracy this was one of the most significant, satisfying, life-changing, enjoyable, heartwarming, unforgettable experiences I have ever had. These wonderful people are my friends for life, and I'm so grateful to have shared this with them.

Thanks to Joel and Elmer, who worked behind the scenes with lights and sounds, and who managed the camera.

MABUHAY!
