HTML Anchor Tag Explained: Relative Paths, Absolute Paths, Fragment IDs, and target | Metrik Rule

The anchor tag is what turns a collection of HTML files into an actual website. This video covers everything you need to link pages together: the href attribute, relative paths for internal links, absolute paths for external links, fragment identifiers for jumping to sections within a page, and the target attribute for controlling whether links open in the same tab or a new one.

We explain the difference between root-relative paths (starting with /) and relative paths based on the current file's location, and show examples of both. Fragment identifiers are demonstrated with id attributes on heading elements and a navigation menu that scrolls to each section.

Practical guidance throughout on when to use each type of path and when target="_blank" is and is not appropriate.
