Coupled Simple Harmonic Oscilators Demonstrate Wave Motion | Doc Physics
This beautiful but hauntingly quiet series of experiments allows for the development of a qualitative model for how certain characteristics of a medium affect the speed of a wave traveling through that medium. In fact, it is not unreasonable to view solids as composed of this apparatus in all three dimensions microscopically. Equilibrium bond lengths can be stressed and respond with restoring forces. Props to Elizabeth, San, and Gus for staying after school for several hours to build and film this adventure. It's ready-built for video analysis. Gus works the camera - he's really tall.
