Soda Can on a Record Player | Impending Motion of Rigid Stuff in Rotating Coordinates | Doc Physics
I posed this problem spontaneously to my class, but later realized that it requires (as far as I can tell) a transformation to an accelerated coordinate system. I had been hoping not to get into that. Oh well. Anyway, it's a useful technique. I guess I'll have to teach them about the Coriolis "Force" now.
Engineers might call this the method of moments applied to dynamics or statics or something. And they'd talk about planar rigid bodies. I don't know all those fancy words.
Oh, and if you DO decide to put an open soda can on your turntable, take your copy of the White Album off first. And drink most of the soda, but NOT all. Why?
