Sock Plush Sewing Tips - 6 Techniques on How To Sew Cute Toys

This video was requested by many people after the Black Cat tutorial, so I hope it will help! It explains the 6 basic techniques used to create a sock plush, with longer camera shots so you can see the whole process. I've also included some tips on needle threading and untangling knots. Please watch the bunny and cat tutorial below for instructions on how to make the actual doll.

1) STUFFING MATERIAL
Normal cotton wool and polyester stuffing both work great. However if you're a beginner and want to make it easier, then please use polyester stuffing if possible (sold in craft stores for making stuffed toys or quilts). Cotton wool is denser so it's harder to push the needle through when sewing the eyes. Cotton also sticks to your thread, which may cause knots when you're trying to seal the base.

2) TWIST KNOTS
I haven't seen a tutorial dealing with this, but it's a pretty common issue I get almost every time I sew. Often for no reason, you will get a small knot with a loop in it when sewing. This isn't an actual knot, just a badly twisted section of thread. However you have to untangle it asap otherwise it might force you to cut the thread and restart.

As soon as you notice a twist knot, stop pulling the needle right away so it doesn't accidentally end up tighter. Then push the needle tip into the deepest part of the knot to see if you can separate the strands. Next, hold onto one side of the thread and push the loop outwards. This should untangle most of them, but if it doesn't work then you may have to start over.

3) PREVENTING TWIST KNOTS
These happen more often with longer thread so try using shorter lengths whenever possible. It's unlikely to happen with thread that is shorter than the length of your elbow. Also use a high-quality thread with a satin/smooth coating which is easier to untangle in case any knots form. The difference between good and bad thread is just a few dollars, so it's really not worth using cheap thread which fray and tangle easily.
