The Kyaiktiyo Pagoda aka the Golden Rock is Myanmar’s most surreal landmark. A giant bolder resting on a steep cliff edge - seemingly defying the laws of gravity! We visited during Thadingyut Festival (the Myanmar Festival of Lights) where thousands of candles are lit underneath the pagoda - a truly UNMISSABLE experience!

Although it’s an important buddhist pilgrimage, the pagoda isn’t often visited by foreign tourists. So how do you get to Golden Rock from Yangon? And is it really worth it? In this travel guide, we give a foreigner's first impressions of Kyaiktiyo and the Thadingyut festival itself.

We took a bus from Yangon bus station to Kin Pun: a bustling market town at the base of the mountain.

From Kin Pun you need to take a special truck up to the rock. Not for the feint of heart!

We stayed on the mountaintop at an expensive, but pretty nice hotel called Kayak Hto. We booked though booking.com and it cost us £65 for one night. This was a slightly higher price due to the festival, but worth it for the short walk to the pagoda!
