Letters to judge discussing case vs Character letters for sentencing

Understanding the difference between letters that are helpful and those that are not. Discuss this with your attorney. You local defense lawyer will know the judge ann you should local rules and have a better understanding of when you should prepare a letter for the court.

Here are two examples of letters that can be used to help a defendant. Add any specific details you believe are necessary but use this as a guide. Remember, do not write a long winded story

Dear Honorable Judge,
I am writing to you today to express my sincere admiration for [Name], a person I have come to know over the past [length of time] years. As [Name]'s [relationship to you], I am aware of the circumstances that led to their current legal situation, and I understand and respect the jury’s verdict.
However, I would like to bring to your attention the kind, compassionate, and hardworking individual that [Name] is. Over the years, I have seen [Name] demonstrate time and time again their dedication to their family, their friends, and their community. Whether it is volunteering at a local shelter, helping a neighbor in need, or simply lending an ear to someone who needs to talk, [Name] has always been a pillar of support to those around them.
[Name] has made mistakes, and they are aware of the impact their actions have had on others. However, I firmly believe that they are capable of making amends and becoming a contributing member of society once again. I urge you to consider [Name]'s character and the positive contributions they have made to society when determining their sentence.
Thank you for your time and consideration.

[Your name]

Or

Dear Honorable Judge,
I am writing to you today in support of [Name], who has either been found guilty by a jury of their peers or has pleaded guilty to [crime]. As [Name]'s [relationship to you], I have been closely involved in this case and want to express my respect for the legal process that has brought us to this point.
While it is important to acknowledge the severity of the crime committed and the impact it has had on those affected by it, I also want to highlight [Name]'s character. Throughout the [length of time] that I have known [Name], I have witnessed their compassion, dedication, and hard work towards their family, friends, and the community.
Despite this unfortunate incident, I strongly believe that [Name] is capable of making amends and becoming a contributing member of society once again. They have expressed remorse for their actions and have taken responsibility for the consequences of their choices.
I urge you to consider [Name]'s positive contributions to society and their potential for rehabilitation when determining their sentence. While it is important to hold individuals accountable for their actions, it is also crucial to provide opportunities for growth and redemption.
