Centropa. Maks Levin. In the classroom. On the front.

Since 2015, Centropa has held nine seminars for 223 teachers in Ukraine (and we turned down another 190 applicants because of space and budget limitations). Maks Levin photographed the seminars in this presentation. Also included are photographs Maks took in high schools, where students acted as docents for Centropa’s Ukrainian-Jewish exhibition. On 24 February, when Russian soldiers invaded Ukraine, Maks went to the front and he sent us the pictures included here. When we told Maks we would like to use these pictures with high school students, he told us that was fine, “just don’t make me into a hero.” Our last email from Maks was on 12 March. He disappeared the next day. His body was recovered on 1 April. He had been shot twice with small arms fire. In other words, he was executed by Russian soldiers.
