Australia should 'increase manufacturing' and 'stand firm against Chinese threats'

Nationals Senator Matt Cannavan says unlike Andrew Forrest and Kerry stokes he doesn't think Australia should "buckle" to Chinese demands, but "we should reduce our vulnerability" to its threats.

The Chinese Ambassador recently made thinly veiled threats suggesting China could decide to boycott Australian goods if our government continued to push for an international independent inquiry into the origins of the coronavirus pandemic.

“We need to secure our future and manufacture more of our products and look to process more of the minerals we produce here in Australia," he told Sky News host Paul Murray.

Mr Canavan said the green economic recovery propagated by the left “would just keep digging the hole that makes us reliant on China”.

He also said renewable energy was a “proven failure” in Australia.

“We’ve had significant renewable investment over the past decade and alongside that we’ve had escalating electricity prices which are now some of the highest electricity prices in the world”.
