John Joseph Montgomery: The Man Who Glided Before the Wright Brothers

John Joseph Montgomery was an American inventor, physicist, and engineer known for pioneering controlled heavier-than-air flight. In the 1880s, he conducted manned glider experiments in California, later presenting his work at the 1893 International Conference on Aerial Navigation. Although his flights followed earlier European gliding attempts, some historians consider his experiments the first controlled heavier-than-air flights in America or the Western Hemisphere. Montgomery developed various control methods, including weight shifting, elevators, trailing edge flaps, and full wing warping systems to enhance flight stability.
