The 4 Ingredients of Mattering | Jennifer Wallace

Mattering comes from being noticed, valued, supported, and relied on—and it’s a two-way street. Journalist Jennifer Wallace explains that people feel they matter through four core ingredients, known as the SAID framework: Significance, Appreciation, Investment, and Dependence. Feeling like we matter is shaped by everyday experiences rather than major achievements—and one of the most effective ways to strengthen our own sense of mattering is to help others feel that they matter, often through small, intentional acts of care and recognition.

Jennifer Wallace is an accomplished journalist and a best-selling author. Jennifer’s first book, "Never Enough: When Achievement Culture Becomes Toxic," sounded the alarm about a troubling trend in our society. She has followed up with a new book entitled "Mattering: The Secret to a Life of Deep Connection and Purpose," which offers an alternative to precarious, achievement-based identities, and shows how to construct more meaningful lives.
