Creating an InDesign Document with a 3-column grid

Start InDesign. Go to File – New Document.
Change unit of measure to Inches.
Width is 8.125", height is 10.875"
Pages is 2, Start on Page 2
Columns is 3 columns, leave gutter as is (equals 1 pica)
Margin: first click on chain at right to "break" chain; default is .5", change bottom to .75"
Bleed and Slug: Set Bleed to .125"; leave Slug as 0".

NOTE: You can use different measurements in these boxes and InDesign will convert them; you can also add, subtract, multiply and divide in these boxes.

BLEED: If you create a document and have colors or images that go to the edge of the page, the printer has to print them on a larger sheet of paper and trim them down. That trimming is not perfectly accurate. So in order to not have the image end before the trim, leaving an ugly white space at the edge of the page, you have to have the color or the image extend over the edge of the page. The Bleed is a red line around the page that shows how far past the page you have to extend the color or image.
