She Walked Into Gestapo Headquarters Alone — Eight Months Pregnant — To Save Her Husband
Lyon, France. 1943. Raymond Aubrac French Resistance leader arrested by the Gestapo. His wife, Lucie, didn't panic.
She walked into the Gestapo office and convinced them to release Raymond by threatening the local prosecutor and he was freed within 24 hours.
One month later, Raymond was arrested again this time by Klaus Barbie. The Butcher of Lyon.
Eight months pregnant, Lucie visited Barbie personally, claiming Raymond was her fiancé. She begged permission for them to marry before his execution — to give their child a name.
Barbie agreed.
As guards transported Raymond back to prison, Lucie and armed Resistance fighters ambushed the convoy killing the guards and freeing him.
She didn't just love him. She went to war for him. Twice.
