ABOUT THE MOTION: This House would rather be a Spartan than an Athenian
Marking 2500 years since the battles of Salamis and Thermoplae, this debate should aim to settle the ancient hellenistic debate, argued over generations, which was the greater: Athens or Sparta?
ABOUT THE SPEAKER (Opening for the Proposition)
Professor Paul Cartledge is a British ancient historian and academic. From 2008 to 2014 he was the A. G. Leventis Professor of Greek Culture at the University of Cambridge. He had previously held a personal chair in Greek History as well as a fellowship at Clare College. He read Greats at New College, Oxford, and wrote his doctoral thesis on Spartan archaeology. A frequent contributor to Radio Four's In Our Time, he is one of Britain's best known academic classicists.
ABOUT THE CAMBRIDGE UNION: From its small beginnings as a debating society, the Cambridge Union is the oldest debating society in the world and the largest student society in Cambridge. The Union remains a unique forum for the free exchange of ideas and the art of public debate.
