In all my years photographing wildlife in Rocky Mountain National Park, I’ve never witnessed a moment quite like this — a deer shedding his velvet, blood still fresh, tattered strands hanging like ribbons across his face.

The elk have dominated the spotlight lately, filling the valleys with their bugles and battles… but now, it’s the deer’s turn to shine. Their rut is beginning — quieter, more subtle, yet every bit as powerful.

Fall always brings new stories to the mountains, and today, I captured one I’ll never forget.
