107 | How to help your new relationship understand | the pitfalls of narcissistic exes ft. Debby

In today’s episode Duane invites Debby, his long term girlfriend of over 6 years, to come on the show to talk about her experience dealing with a toxic ex spouse. Part of the reality is most people do not understand how complex and nasty these situations can be. Debby talks about how she thought, hoped, she would be a peace maker and help calm things down. She quickly realized that was not going to be the case. This quickly resulted in the ex working to sabotage any special event that we did as a “family”. A listener asks Debby about her past history and they talk about her children, past relationships and how her experience, although difficult, was nothing like what DSD is going through. They then discuss the first few times Debby met “pumpkin” and how that interaction went. This flows into a discussion about the first time, early in DSD and Debby’s relationship, where she realized he had been deeply emotionally traumatized by the ex. They then discuss examples of triangulation and how that has manifested over the course of the relationship. A listener asks if DSD’s ex ever trying to emulate or “mimic” Debby. Finally they discuss how stressful this all really was and how easily it could have destroyed their relationship.
