Mikhail Tal (9 November 1936 – 28 June 1992) was the eighth World Chess Champion.

He was Soviet champion, world blitz champion and won gold medals in the Chess Olympiads. He held the record for the longest unbeaten streak in competitive chess and was a highly regarded chess writer.
