Joseph Blackburne (10 December 1841 – 1 September 1924) was a British chess player and writer.

He won at Berlin 1881, London 1886 and was 1st equal at Vienna 1873. His nickname was "The Black Death". He helped to popularize chess by giving simultaneous and blindfold displays. The Blackburne Shilling Gambit (1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bc4 Nd4?!) and the Blackburne checkmate are named after him.
