Making Machines Creative. | Ali Eslami | TEDxWarwick

Through his experience as a research scientist at Google’s DeepMind, Ali Eslami guides us to a concrete understanding of what AI is, and how it relates to us. Contrary to popular belief, it’s not a new phenomenon — the term Al was actually coined back in 1956. What is more, fantastical Hollywood depictions of artificial intelligence encapsulated within hyper-realistic human forms is a far cry from the reality of its function within our society. However, that doesn’t mean it isn’t capable of truly remarkable and innovative feats. Ali shows us some of its more creative capabilities through some realistic and some aesthetically beautiful paintings created purely from a computer’s own “imagination”. Through his words, we gain a greater understanding of how the creativity of artificial intelligence is crucial in imagining innovative solutions in response to our world’s crises. Ali Eslami is a research scientist at DeepMind from Google, a world leading research organisation in Artificial Intelligence.

Specialising in machine learning, Ali specifically works on how to make machines more independent learners. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
