Aston Martin have come up with a GENIUS new rear wing. They seem to have found a really clever loophole in the regulations to allow them to produce more downforce.
Where the regs say no to end plates - Aston Martin have found a way to do it legally.
But on top of that, we think this is such a big move that it’s very likely that many of the teams are already working on a copy.
So lets get into how they did it, and how much difference it’s actually going to make.
So first, why would Aston want an end plate on their rear wing?
It’s because it enables them to create more downforce by making the wing more efficient. They do this by keeping flow from spilling off the end of the wing.
So a wing on a race car creates low pressure below the wing, and high pressure above it - this difference puts a downward load on the wing - downforce. But if you have no end plate on the wing, then the high pressure wants to spill around the edge to the low pressure below.
That means that not all of the surface of the wing is creating peak downforce - and therefore makes them less efficient.
So an end plate stops this. And if you look on road car wings, race cars and even some planes - they have end plates to make them more efficient.
