Automatic ‘check-in’ recalls

It’s poor social etiquette and even dangerous to allow your dogs to just rush up to any dog in the park, especially if they are on lead. The dog could be on lead for good reason for example it might be reactive, fearful, injured or just has poor recall.

Ideally, you would like your dog to check with you before going over to say hello or play with another dog. To successfully do this you will need to make it an automatic habit!

Building habits, takes repetition, rewards and consistency. If you practice a recall every time your dog looks at another dog then your dog will make an association between looking at the dog and checking in with you.

In the early weeks you will likely need a management tool such as a training line to prevent your dog from rushing off without coming to you first. If your dog does not recall to you when you ask, then do not let your dog rush off to see the other dog. They absolutely must recall to you before going to say hello.

It usually takes about 6 to 8 weeks of repetition and reward in order to change a habitual behaviour. If you stick to it consistently for this amount of time you will get there!
