How to Diagnose and Repair a Misfiring and Rough Running Honda Fit

Video showing my methodical approach on how to fix a common problem with the Honda Fit where the engine will misfire when idling or in more extreme cases will stall the engine.

The Honda Fits were known to have a problem with their ignition coils weakening with age and mileage. As the coils "wear out" they can no longer produce the strong spark needed for a higher than average compression engine which results in a weak misfire that isn't sufficient enough to trigger the ECU to store a misfire check engine code. The misfire progressively worsens with time and in the most extreme cases render the vehicle un-driveable.

If not promptly repaired long term damage to the engine can occur where unburned fuel will damage the catalytic converter as well as result in uneven wear on the motor due to uneven compression forces from a weak cylinder.

Generally speaking the coils rarely all fail at the same time with usually 1 or 2 coils failing around the same time. The sooner the problem is identified the easier it is to troubleshoot and fix.

The repair is easy and relatively inexpensive to complete and certainly far cheaper than paying a mechanic or a dealership to look into the issue.
