9 years of Lightning

A time-lapse montage of the Sierra Designs Lightning tent.

The Lightning was one of the lightest 3-season tents back in 2007. We did not have a lot of options for tents in India back in 2007, so I ordered it from the US. Shipping and Customs fee cost me as much as the tent itself. But it was well worth it.

Having a good tent (and sleeping bag) gave me the confidence to hike alone in the Himalaya. This tent has been with me during numerous solo hiking and camping trips in various parts of the Himalayas.

i have used it in heavy winds, rain and snow. In altitudes ranging from 2000m all the way upto 5100meters. And the tent never gave me much cause for concern. The tent is great for a single person. It can sleep 2 people easily but then there would be enough room to store 2 backpacks under its vestibule. But it never bothered me though as I always used it as a single person tent.

A few other things did bother me though. The tent would heat up like a sauna under the hot summer sun. It would be nice to have more ventilation points to let the breeze pass through the tent. And I really like the design of the latest tents where the inner and outer layers are connected making it a breeze to pitch the tent in heavy winds or rain.

And this is only a 3 season tent. So I carry a different tent with me during my winter trips to Ladakh. The Blackdiamond Tripod Bivy. It is rock solid as they come but not the slightest bit comfortable for extended camping.

I'am now looking for a proper 4 season tent that I can use all year round in the Himalaya. The latest 4 season tents from Sierra Designs look good and so does the Hilleberg tents. I have until next winter (2017) to decide and until then I will continue enjoying camping in the Lightning.
