7 steps to develop a theoretical framework for empirical research

In this video, I introduce 7 steps you can use to develop a theoretical framework for empirical research. Following these 7 steps, you should be able to start building your theoretical framework.

03:59 Step 1: Write down your topic of interest, problem of statement, and research questions. What’s the topic you’d like to study? What’s the problem statement? What research questions do you want to ask, and then use the data you’ll collect to find the answers?
05:28 Step 2: Find relevant theories and constructs.
09:35 Step 3: Find out what theories predict the relationships among the constructs.
13:43 Step 4: Write down the assumptions of the theories listed above.
16:02 Step 5: Do the assumptions hold? What is missing in the current theories? What constructs need to be added to the existing theories? What roles do the added constructs play? Is the added construct a mediator? Or moderator?
26:50 Step 6: Draft a graph to illustrate your theoretical framework which includes the constructs and their relationships.
28:34 Step 7: Rewrite your research questions that include the constructs and the predicted relationships among the constructs.
