Remembering the 2003 Mt Stromlo bushfires
On 18 January 2023 we mark the twentieth anniversary of the 2003 Canberra bushfires that devastated the ACT and ANU Mount Stromlo Observatory.
In one ruinous day, four people were killed, hundreds injured and 500 homes destroyed.
ANU Vice Chancellor and Nobel prize-winning astronomer, Professor Brian Schmidt, and Director of the ANU Research School of Astronomy and Astrophysics at the time, Professor Penny Sackett, share their experiences of this momentous event and reflect on its lasting impact on our community.
From destruction to rebirth and beyond, the fires remain embedded in the folklore of ANU to this day.
