Hong Kong reported 342 local Covid-19 cases on February 6, 2022, with the city’s fifth wave of infections yet to hit its peak. Since late January, at least 320 undetected transmission chains have emerged in the community. The city’s health minister Sophia Chan said the current Covid-19 outbreak had become “extremely severe”. Hong Kong has been maintaining a “dynamic zero-Covid” strategy, which allows for infections so long as the outbreak is quickly contained by pandemic measures in place. But the recent surge of infections has experts agreeing the strategy cannot continue indefinitely, with the head of the Hospital Authority Tony Ko proposing that some patients may eventually have to self-isolate at home.
