The United States has sharply escalated pressure on Iran following the second round of nuclear negotiations in Geneva, which showed only limited progress. Vice President JD Vance reiterated that President Trump prefers a diplomatic deal to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons, but made it clear that “all options,” including military force, remain on the table. Trump has already deployed two aircraft carrier groups, over 50 fighter jets (including F-22s, F-35s, and F-16s), and hinted at using UK bases like Diego Garcia and Fairford for potential strikes. He described negotiations as “very tough” and warned of “bad things” if Iran does not meet his red lines.
Iran has responded with firm defiance. President Masoud Pezeshkian and Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei rejected what they called American bullying, insisting Iran is not developing nuclear weapons and will not bow to threats. In a show of strength, Iran temporarily closed parts of the strategic Strait of Hormuz during military drills and conducted joint naval exercises with Russia. The UK’s refusal to approve Trump’s request to use its military bases has added another layer of complication, raising questions about whether the US is losing key Western backing as tensions continue to rise.
