Insulin Resistance Improvement | What to Do?

Insulin resistance explained and HOW TO REVERSE INSULIN RESISTANCE. Causes, symptoms, and treatment of insulin resistance.

What does insulin do

Insulin is a hormone that helps regulate your blood sugar and is made by an organ known as the pancreas that sits behind your stomach. Your pancreas sends insulin into your bloodstream after you eat a meal or if it detects that your blood sugar levels are high, lets say if you have a bag of these (sour patch kids). Once the insulin is in your bloodstream, It has 2 jobs. One to take the sugar out of your blood and send it to your cells, so it can be used for energy. This is because Our bodies dont always need a sugary blood stream, we need to put that sugar to good use and Most of the cells in your body contain insulin receptors. The second is to take the sugar out of your blood and this time, store it in muscles, fat cells, and the liver to use for later. And When it’s stored, the original form of sugar, glucose, becomes another form of sugar known as glycogen.
What is insulin resistance

Insulin resistance occurs when cells in your muscles, liver, and body fat begin to resist or (ignore) the signal that insulin sends out. If it ignores it, the sugar stays in the blood and doesnt get shuttled in anywhere. In other words, instead of being sensitive to the effects of insulin, they become resistant to the effects of insulin, and when sugar stays in your bloodstream, a number of different issues arise: prediabetes, type 2 diabetes, and more serious, damage to nerves and organs.

What causes insulin resistance

1.) Living a sedentary lifestyle, such as long periods of inactivity or not enough physical exercise
2.) Being overweight or obese, specifically when we talk about visceral fat, which a major factor in high insulin resistance.
3.) A poor diet: which is Any diet that is high in carbs or sugars
4.) PCOS
5.) High doses of steroids taken for longer than a few weeks.
6.) Chronic stress:

Is insulin resistance genetic

There are cases in which having insulin resistance may not be your fault at all like genetics or having a family history of insulin resistance or diabetes.

What are the symptoms of insulin resistance

In the beginning, your body tries to fight the effects of insulin resistance by releasing more insulin. But the cells are not responding to insulin as well as they should, so for a while, more insulin in your bloodstream helps keep your blood sugar levels normal and you may not have any noticeable symptoms of insulin resistance in the beginning. BUT: Over time, as insulin resistance gets worse, even more insulin won’t be able to make up for your cells’ weak response to it. And At this point, high blood sugar levels often become the first symptom of insulin resistance.

As high blood sugar persists, you may begin to notice
1.) Excessive thirst
2.) Frequently needing to go pee
3.) More headaches
4.) Feeling hungry after a meal
5.) Feeling more tired than usual
6.) Tingling sensations in hands and feet
7.) Frequent infections.

How to know if you have insulin resistance

To actually know, you need a diagnosis, which is done with the A1c test, which measures your average blood sugars over the previous 2 to 3 months. And your doctor will reconfirm these tests later as well, a fasting blood glucose test, a glucose tolerance test, and random blood draws. And your doctor may recommend doing these tests if you have high blood pressure, if you have a sedentary lifestyle, have excess body fat around the waist, have high cholesterol, or if you are showing signs of prediabetes. Because the end goal is to prevent worsening complications and the development of full blown diabetes.

How to reverse insulin resistance fast

1.) Get in at least 30 minutes of physical activity most days of the week. Exercise is one of the fastest and most effective ways to reverse insulin resistance. Both Aerobic and resistance training can help to reverse it, so combining them in your workouts seems most effective.
2.) Lose belly weight.
3.) Protein and low sugar. Protein helps keep your body’s blood sugar levels stable, whereas high-sugar diets can cause spikes in blood sugar that only make insulin resistance worse. So following a meal plan recommended by the ADA can help improve insulin response.
