Discover Maputo - The Beautiful Capital City of Mozambique
In this video we will take you through a journey of Southern Africa hidden paradise, Maputo city, the Beautiful Capital City of Mozambique.
Maputo, a city graced with a rich fusion of classical European architectural design and a unique touch of local Mozambique art. This historic city boasts a strong array of cultures with the Bantu and Portuguese standing out as the most dominant, however, the Arabic, Indian and Chinese influence are most noteworthy. With a population of over a million people, the nation's capital city stands as the most populated city.
Maputo is seated in the large Delagoa natural bay on the Indian Ocean, close to the point of convergence of the rivers Tembe, Infulene, Matola, and Mbuluzi. The ancient city was formerly settled by the Tsonga people as a fishing village. Prior to a change in name, the city was known as Lourenço Marques, in the honor of a Portuguese trader and navigator who explored the region in the mid-1500s. Starting out as a small town around a Portuguese fortress in the year 1850, the town transcended into a city growing in population and gaining recognition for its economic development as a port city by the early 20th century. The Mozambican Nation attained independence in the year 1975. It then renamed the Lourenço Marques city to Maputo and elevated its status to the capital city.
As a vibrant city that delights in commerce, its principal source of economic development lies heavily on the port. At its peak, the port has been capable of handling an estimated 17 million tons of cargo; this was as far back as the year 1971. As of today, the government has outsourced management of the port to the Maputo Port Development Company in an effort to upgrade infrastructure and improve its functioning.
