The favorite boot of Nazi-punching archaeologists, the Alden Indy is one of the most famous American boots and they look the part. Made from gorgeous, soft Chromexcel leather and characterized by bright moc toe stitching and a light tan welt, these eye-catching boots look classic yet modern, almost sneaker like.

DURABILITY: These will last a long time, but the Chromexcel is a little prone to scratching and you really need to make sure you take care of the leather. Neatsfoot oil or some Venetian shoe cream will probably do the trick, but even though those are neutral colored, you can expect these to darken a little and lose their lustre with age — be prepared.

QUALITY: There was a deep crevice between the heel and the sole of these 270-degree Goodyear welted boots, clearly a quality control issue from their headquarters — I wasn't that impressed.

FIT: It's critical to remember that Alden uses combination lasts, so the heels are slimmer than the rest of the boot. This may result in a roomier toe box at best or a too-tight heel at worst. Try your best to get them in a store so you can test the fit, or if you can't, make absolutely certain you only wear them around the house in case you need to replace them.

The good news: with a triple ribbed steel shank, these have great arch support.

SOLE: Made with a Foot Balance heel and a neo-cork sole, these are a good compromise between slippery leather soles and more slip-resistant (but less classic-looking) Commando soles.
