The Higgins Mill is one of the most versatile boots on the market, at home with slacks and joggers alike. But boy, did I have issues with the QC.

LEATHER: This is made from rich, oily Chromexcel leather from Horween Leather Company, which has a great depth of color and ages well. That said, it's a little vulnerable to scratching, so you want to make sure you're taking care of it properly. Allen Edmonds recommends their own neutral-colored leather lotion, which is free from mink and silicone, though you'd probably be fine using Venetian shoe cream or Saphir's Renovateur.

SOLE: This is a 360-degree Goodyear welt, which makes the shoes pretty water resistant and, more importantly, easier to resole as they age and wear out. There's a cork midsole and glove leather lining, and the outsole is Vibram, a kind of rubber that isn't quite as classic looking as a leather or oak sole, but it's way more functional and less vulnerable to slipping in harsh conditions. I'm a big fan.

FIT & SIZING: Unlike a lot of competitors, these fit pretty much true to size. While I'm an 11 in Wolverine, Red Wing, and Thursday, I'm an 11.5 in Allen Edmonds. There's a pretty impressive variety of widths available: B, D, E, and EE.
