Henry Cowell / Fairy Answer
Henry Cowell (1897-1965)
Fairy Answer (1929)
Performed by Henry Cowell
"The Fairy Answer was composed after a visit to my grandfather's place in Kildare. An old gardener took me to a certain spot--a glen--and he said 'I hear you're a musician now' and I said 'Yes' and he said 'Well if you'll play your music in one end of the glen, the fairies will come out and answer you from the other end of the glen with their own.' And he looked at me rather quizzically and he said 'Of course if you're very materialistic you might think it was an echo. But then in order that you should know it was not an echo they always change the music about just a little bit so that you will know it's they themselves.'" - Cowell
"One simple diatonic idea alternates on the piano strings and the piano keyboard." - Sidney Cowell
Painting: Sunlight in Forest, Charles Burchfield
