Born in Nairobi, Kenya (East Africa) on August 3, 1919, where his father worked as an official in the railways, Jaidev (Jai Dev Verma) moved with his family to Ludhiana in 1927 after the death of his father where he began learning vocal music. While continuing his musical training, he also took up a job as a music teacher in a school.

Ali Akbar Khan, the Sarod Maestro was the musician at the court of 28-year-old Maharaja of the erstwhile princely state of Jodhpur. When the Khan’s patron, the Maharaja, died in a plane crash, Ali Akbar Khan asked his young disciple Jaidev to pack up and accompany him to Bombay. At the initial stage of his career Jaidev acted in 4-5 swashbuckling/mythological films, but soon realized that ‘acting’ was not his forte.

In Bombay, Chetna Anand approached Ali Akbar Khan to compose music for his couple of films produced under the family banner Navketan – Aandhiyan (1952) and Humsafar (1953), starring Dev Anand. But both these films failed to click at the box office. Ali Akbar Khan moved on but Jaidev decided to stay on in Bombay and began assisting veteran music director S D Burman. In that capacity, under Navketan banner, he contributed in landmark scores for Taxi Driver (1954), Munimji, House No. 44 (1955), Kala Pani, Laajwanti (1958), Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi (1958) and the song in Agneepath – “Raat Bhi Hai Kuch Bheegi Bheegi”. He also assisted Burman dada in Sujata and Insaan Jaag Utha (1959).

Jaidev’s first break as an independent music director came with Chetan Anand’s Joru Ka Bhai (1955) which starred Balraj Sahni. Although this film too did not fare well at the box office, it gave the young music director ample opportunity to showcase his skills. The stand out song was the delectable Subah Ka Intezaar. Then came Samundari Daku (1956) and Chetan Anand’s Anjali (1957). Both these films had some fine songs but it was in 1961 with Hum Dono that Jaidev really caught music lovers’ attention. The stupendous success of Hum Dono was followed up with the classy Mujhe Jeene Do (1963) – the tragic love story of a dacoit and a courtesan. With Hum Dono and Mujhe Jeene Do, Jaidev seemed to have entered the big league.

In 1971, Jaidev composed music for Reshma Aur Shera – a passion project of Sunil Dutt for which he left no stone unturned for it to succeed. It was India’s entry as the best foreign-language film at the international 44th Academy Awards. The hauntingly melodious songs of the film, particularly the unparalleled and mesmerizing song by Lata Mangeshkar Tu Chanda Main Chandni, fetched Jaidev a National Award. In the same year, he composed for another film set in Rajasthan, K A Abbas’s Do Boond Paani (a drama on the theme of water scarcity). one of his high points Faslah (1974) – which had a magnetically attractive song Zindagi Cigarette Ka Dhuaan.

The period 1977-79 saw Jaidev doing some of his best work, with films such as Alaap (1977), Gharonda (1977), Tumhare Liye (1978), and Dooriyaan (1979). The latter film (which starred Uttam Kumar and Sharmila Tagore) had two very memorable duets rendered by Anuradha Paudwal and Bhupinder Singh. Also in this period came Muzaffar Ali’s Gaman (1978) which portrayed the story of a migrant taxi driver in Bombay which fetched Jaidev his second National Award. Chhaya Ganguly in this film. Jaidev’s last film score was in Trikon Ka Chautha Kon (1986). Unfortunately, many of his best compositions have been lost in unfinished films and albums.

Jaidev’s filmography includes 41 films for which he composed some 250+ songs. Some of the other notable films for which he composed music include ( in chronological order): Kinare Kinare, Aashadh Ka Ek Din, Aazadi Pachchis Baras Ki, Prem Parbat; Aalingan, Parinay, Ek Hans Ka Joda, Faasla, Aandolan, Alaap, Tumhare Liye, Dooriyaan, Aatish, Solvan Saawan, Aai Teri Yaad, Ek Gunaah Aur Sahi, Wohi Baat, Ankahee, Trikon Ka Chautha Kon 1986, and Amarjyoti.
