OBESITY AND WEIGHT MANAGEMENT | NARAYANA HEALTH GROUP PANEL EXPERTS

Dr. Devi Shetty, Dr. Satish, Dr. Shubhayu, and Dr. Ashwin shed light on the nitty-gritty of obesity, bariatric surgery, its benefits, and post-recovery care of bariatric surgery on today’s episode of NH Dialogues.

Dr. Satish explains obesity as the excess of body fat. Body Mass Index (BMI) is a measure that gives an approximation of body fat in adults and children above two years. It is calculated by using weight in kilograms by height in meter square. In the case of an adult, a BMI of 18.5 to 24.9 is expected. A BMI between 25 and 29.9 is overweight, and a BMI above 30 is called obesity. In India and other Asian countries, the standards are altered owing to the greater risk of developing heart diseases, and a BMI of 23 and 27 is considered overweight.

Dr. Ashwin elaborates on bariatric surgery as a group of surgery that is done to manage weight. The risk of bariatric surgery in ideal conditions is less than 1 percent, but patients must undergo a detailed evaluation of their cardiovascular diseases. The panel further explains the nuances of bariatric surgery, such as good post-recovery practices, misconceptions, etc. Various studies reveal that in 30 to 50 percent of cases, obesity is genetic and depends upon family history. The panel also throws light on the conception between thyroid and obesity. The discussion concludes with Dr. Ashwin talking about the costs of bariatric surgery.

Dr. Devi Shetty is the Chairman of Narayana Health. Dr. Satish Kumar is the Head of Endocrinology and Bariatric Medicine at Mazumdar Shaw Medical Center, Narayana Health City, Bangalore.
