Discussions on Thalassemia with Dr. Devi Shetty and Narayana Health's panel of experts

The 8th edition of NH Dialogues brings you a holistic discussion on thalassemia. 8th May is observed as World Thalassemia Day, and India is deemed a global center of thalassemia owing to more than 10000 children suffering from the disease every year. Thalassemia is an inherited disorder of the blood caused when the body doesn't produce enough hemoglobin – a protein that is a pivotal part of red blood cells. The lack of hemoglobin in the body obstructs the seamless performance of red blood cells, and they last for shorter periods. Thus, the number of healthy red blood cells traveling in the bloodstream is less than required.

Dr. Devi Shetty from Narayana Health Group explains the two types of thalassemia – alpha-thalassemia and Beta-thalassemia, and the more common variant is the latter in India, Bangladesh. Dr. Rajiv elucidates categories of thalassemia based on clinical severity – thalassemia major (the patients who depend on regular blood transfusions for their survival) and thalassemia minor (patients who do not require it) any specific treatments. The esteemed panel from Narayana Health answers various queries regarding thalassemia and articulates the signs and symptoms of the disorder that range from shortness of breath to weakness. Dr. Sunil Bhatt talks about the carrier stage of thalassemia and the revolutionary potential of getting tested at the carrier state. The doctors discuss the many complications of thalassemia and also talk about the viable solutions. Novel methods of treatment are also discussed at length. Countries like Italy and Greece have eradicated thalassemia, and the pertinent question is whether India will be able to do the same in the near future.

Dr. Devi Shetty is the Chairman of Narayana Health, Dr. Sunil Bhatt is the Head Pediatric Hematology, Oncology, and Blood & Marrow Transplantation at Mazumdar Shaw Cancer Center – Narayana Health City, Bangalore, and Dr. Rajiv Dey is the Head of Hematology and Hemato-Oncology at Narayana Super-specialty Hospital, Kolkata.
