Bank of Agriculture Launches New Clean Energy Unit to Power Smallholder Farmers

As Nigeria continues to battle food insecurity, high post-harvest losses, and the skyrocketing costs of agricultural production, a major shift toward sustainable solutions is underway. At a crucial two-day capacity-building workshop in Abuja, the Bank of Agriculture (BOA), in partnership with the African Climate Foundation, gathered experts to explore how clean energy financing can fundamentally strengthen the country's agricultural value chain.

​The core bottleneck for Nigerian agribusiness has long been energy access. Inadequate electricity heavily restricts farming, processing, storage, and distribution. To tackle this, facilitators at the workshop highlighted the undeniable link between power availability and agricultural productivity.

​To bridge this gap, the Bank of Agriculture is operationalizing a specialized Clean Energy Development and Innovation Unit. Spearheaded by the bank's leadership, this bold framework introduces a team of specialists tasked with developing a targeted evaluation toolkit for effective, climate-aligned lending.
​The ultimate goal? To empower smallholder farmers across the nation with direct access to clean energy for irrigation, automated processing, and household power, all handled in a climate-smart, eco-friendly way. Stakeholders agree that expanding these green investments will drastically reduce food spoilage, increase yields, and build a much more resilient agricultural sector for Nigeria's future.
