Ohio evacuated after big chemical fire caused by train derailment

As emergency personnel continued to monitor hot spots from a massive fire that was started by a train disaster the previous night, thousands of residents of East Palestine, Ohio, remained outside of their houses on Saturday. The derailment site, where rail cars were thrown about like toys, was surrounded by a one-mile radius that East Palestine Mayor Trent Conaway ordered evacuated early on Saturday. A small portion of the nearby Pennsylvanian town of Darlington was under a shelter-in-place order, but there are no homes there, according to Beaver County 911 dispatchers. East Palestine, which is near Beaver and Lawrence counties, is located about 55 miles northwest of Pittsburgh. The evacuation affected between 1,500 and 2,000 residents; the village has a population of roughly 4,800. Although no casualties were reported, the state emergency was declared and an evacuation order was issued as a result of the fire due to the dangerous materials on the train. Officials expressed their concern about vinyl chloride in some of the train's tank cars during a news conference on Saturday afternoon. According to the National Cancer Institute, vinyl chloride is a colorless gas that burns readily. It is manufactured in an industrial setting for industrial and commercial purposes, chiefly to make polyvinyl chloride, a plastic resin used in a wide range of items, including pipes, coatings for wire and cable, and packaging material.
