10 PM: Hurricane Ida shifts east, forecast as Cat 4 at landfall
Hurricane Ida is currently located in the central Gulf of Mexico, approximately 235 miles southeast of Houma, Louisiana.
On the latest forecast track, the National Hurricane Center has Ida making landfall in southeast Louisiana Sunday afternoon as a Category 4 hurricane with winds of 130 mph. There is always advised to plan for a category higher as there is always uncertainty with a tropical system intensity.
The storm is expected to rapidly intensify due to deep, warm ocean waters and relaxed wind shear in the Gulf of Mexico. Combined with a decent outflow, these ingredients are prime for a strong, potentially devastating storm to grow in the atmosphere.
