1 AM: Hurricane Ida becomes a major Cat 3 storm

As of 1 a.m., Hurricane Ida is churning over the open Gulf waters. The storm has maximum sustained winds of 115 mph, making it a major Category 3 storm.

Although the storm hasn't strengthened much over the past few hours, don't let your guard down. It's expected to rapidly intensify before landfall. Life-threatening storm surge, potentially catastrophic wind damage, and flooding rain will begin impacting the northern Gulf coast Sunday morning.

The forecast track has shifted slightly eastward with landfall occurring earlier Sunday afternoon. Ida is still forecast to be a Category 4 major hurricane at landfall.

Gov. John Bel Edwards has declared an emergency for all of Louisiana and says everyone in the danger area should be in a safe place to ride out the storm by Saturday night.
