HOW TO GET INTO UC BERKELEY (3 TIPS) | Mini Campus Tour Vlog

Hey y'all! In this video, several Cal students and I go over some of our most effective tips when it comes to college admissions and getting into schools like UC Berkeley. Hope you also enjoy the mini campus vlog & find the tips helpful! More details on tips below.

Tip #1 (2:12): Be specific about your future goals and talk about how the UC system (or college) will help you get there.
Schools often have essay questions like "Why do you want to attend X college/university?" It's important to effectively convey why you want to go to their school so you can differentiate yourself from other applicants. You can talk about how specific events shaped your life and extracurricular experiences (for example, I talked about why running a small store made me want to study business in college). Think about: What resources does school Y have that others don't? How would I contribute to the student community? What specific skills and/or perspectives do I bring to the table? Additionally, you can also talk about specific professors and classes you'd be interested in (this applies more towards specific universities since the UC schools have one application for the entire system).

Tip #2 (2:50): Think about how you can differentiate yourself from others within your school (grades and extracurriculars-wise).
In terms of academic performance, schools like UC will rank students against other students from their high school, not the total applicant pool. The rule of thumb is to stay in the top 10% of your high school class in terms of GPA. This means it could be harder for students to stand out academically at a competitive high school.
For extracurriculars, think about your "spike," or what theme best describes your background? (are you an arts, sciences, or business person? etc.) Focus on a few areas and become really good at it. (examples: leadership positions in a science club, running your own business, winning competitions in X field, etc.)

Tip #3 (3:30): If you're waitlisted at a school, pay special attention to any additional "optional" essays and reiterate your desire to go there + any relevant life updates.
When I got waitlisted at UC Berkeley, there was an "optional" 500-word essay to update the admissions committee on my grades, extracurricular activities, and other comments. If you get into this situation, it's HIGHLY recommended that you submit an extra statement or essay (it's not actually optional). Let the school know of any updates you have from fall semester grades and if there were any developments in your extracurriculars. You could also use the space to reiterate your desire to go to X school; talk about specific professors, classes, and activities you can see yourself being apart of.
