Govt to provincialise schools, cut fees, simplify teacher categories
Education Minister Rakkam Sangma on Thursday announced that the government’s plan to phase out the deficit system in educational institutions and provincialise them will greatly enhance access to affordable education.
He explained that if the process goes smoothly, students burdened by high fees will benefit from significant fee reductions, while teachers will be fully integrated into government administration.
Consultations are underway with heads of deficit pattern institutions. For example, Shillong College’s current BA semester fee of ₹66,230 is expected to drop to around ₹15,000. Similar fee reductions are planned for other institutions to make education more accessible.
The government also aims to simplify the existing 13 teacher categories into two or three groups: grant-in-aid government teachers, fully government teachers, and privately-run institution teachers. Most institutions have shown a positive response to these changes.
The government will proceed only after consulting all stakeholders. Institutions refusing provincialisation will remain independent and manage finances via the Meghalaya Education Grant. Minister Sangma called this a historic step to streamline education and ease students’ financial burdens.
