Sohra police raise safety concerns, push for CCTV and tourism reforms
Sohra Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Pynhun M. Syiem on Friday has voiced serious concerns over the lack of CCTV surveillance in hotels and restaurants along key highways, which hindered the recent search for a missing couple from Indore.
The issue was raised during a consultative meeting convened by Sohra SDO (Civil) Mark A. Challam, following the tragic disappearance of Raja and Sonam Raghuvanshi. Raja’s body was found on June 2, while the search for Sonam continues.
Syiem urged the SDO to seek state help for installing high-res CCTV on major routes. The SDO outlined safety measures: mandatory local guides for treks, CCTV at accommodations, guest verification, and MTIME app use for real-time tourist tracking.
Tourism Department highlighted the MTIME app and launched the Tourist Buddies Program with trained local youth as safety ambassadors.
Stakeholders proposed guide training, improved signage, and community safety efforts. A candlelight vigil was also suggested to support the victims’ families, emphasizing the need for safer tourism in Sohra.
