Sir Peter Blake Trust Leadership Week - Day 5 - Dr Hamish Wright
Hamish was a student at Palmerston North Boys’ High School from 1999-2003. He went on to study Medicine at Otago University and has then worked in New Plymouth, Wellington, Dunedin, Palmerston North and Auckland. In 2013, he studied Tropical Medicine at the leading London School of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene in the United Kingdom before working for six months in a rural hospital in eastern Zambia. In 2016, he spent 10 months working for the United States Antarctic Program as the base doctor at the Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station, at the Geographic South Pole. Life at the most southernmost point in the world involved six months without sunlight, the rest of the time bathed in 24-hour light. The long continuous winter night, gave some of the best view of the Aurora Australis, (the Southern Lights). To keep busy during the winter, Hamish pursued a pastime in photography, and has won the Timelapse Category award at the New Zealand Geographic Magazine Photographer of the Year awards. During the winter, a medical emergency necessitated the first ever South Pole mid-winter medevac, for which Hamish received a letter of thanks from President Barack Obama. Hamish is now working in Auckland, continuing his training in Intensive Care and Internal Medicine. When not working, he keeps busy in the outdoors hunting, running, fishing, and skiing.
