Aviation Year 2021: HIGHLIGHTS

The Year 2021 nearly comes to an end, this is our second video with our personal highlights. Again we want to say thank you so much for your support, really really appreciate it! With this video, we want to rewind our highlights of the year 2021. In this second videos, we also want to show you some footage that we have not published yet as a NASA 747SP-21.

This is the NASA 747SP-21 "SOFIA":
The Stratospheric Observatory For Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA) is a flying telescope developed jointly by NASA and the German Aerospace Center (DLR) for infrared astronomy. For this purpose, a reflecting telescope was installed on board a converted Boeing 747SP. Compared to Earth-based infrared telescopes, it offers the advantage of flying above the troposphere, which absorbs much of the infrared radiation. SOFIA has been in operation since November 30, 2010.
The aircraft is a Boeing 747SP, which has a shorter fuselage, greater maximum altitude and longer range than the basic 747-100/200 version. The Boeing 747SP can thus fly at altitudes of up to 15 km above 99 percent of the water vapor that interferes with observations
The aircraft, with registration N747NA, made its maiden flight on April 25, 1977
After a D-check in 2014, Lufthansa Technik performed a C-check on the aircraft from October 2020, as it did most recently in 2017.
On February 4, 2021, SOFIA landed at Cologne/Bonn Airport to conduct 20 research flights over Europe from there over a six-week period. This is the first full SOFIA science campaign from European soil. This is when our clips were taken.
