Stephen Curry is averaging 23 points on 39.5% from the field and 20% from 3. It’s only been 2 games, but the best shooter in NBA history has been a wreck, also averaging 5 turnovers a game including 8 against the Clippers. Even against a Thunder team lacking superstars and non-title contenders, Curry was a -30. Of course on paper all of this looks really bad, but in this case, there’s just more to the individual stats, and just more to this Warriors team that we have to look at.

The Warriors have 2 active players besides Curry and Green who have played for the Warriors before, Jacob Evans and Damion Lee. There’s a whole joke going around about the Warriors running Curry with a bunch of G-league players, and… that isn’t a joke. What that means is that there is a learning curve for these young players, and more importantly, almost no chemistry.

Chemistry can go a long way in running offensive sets and more importantly in a team with not as much talent, it’s knowing where you are supposed to be on the court to best benefit the team. A lot of the Warriors players are confused on where they should be, which in turn actually get in the way for other players.

The Warriors aren’t making their shots and both the Clippers and Thunder were happy to forget about every other player on the court. On pick and rolls, they would run Curry off the three point line with a hard hedge or even a double. It has become so bad in just two games and we saw that in the NBA Finals that the Raptors just threw everyone at Curry. It makes sense. A lot of these younger players aren’t knockdown shooters, they are all average at best so the spacing becomes terrible. The Warriors have 2 shooters in Spellman who shot 34% from 3 last year and D’Angelo Russell who shot 37% from 3. The rest of the players are either rookies or shot less than 30% from 3.

In 2012-13, the Warriors won 47 games in Klay Thompson’s second season, Draymond Green’s 1st season when he was playing 13 minutes a game, multiple injuries to Andrew Bogut and Brandon Rush, and with Stephen Curry averaging 23 and 7 or in 2014 when the Warriors won 51 games and Stephen Curry was the only All-Star on that team. When LeBron was hyping up Curry. The simple times.

LeBron in 06-07 was special and there’s no denying that. His team on the other hand, wasn’t so great. Their second best player was Zydrunas Illgauskas who was a 2 time all-star and not bad this season, but these just weren’t the best of the best role players. But, almost the whole team had been in the league for a while, most of the players had played with LeBron for at least 2 previous seasons like Big Z, Anderson Varejao, Larry Hughes, Eric Snow, Drew Gooden. They knew where to be to best let LeBron do his thing. They knew their roles and let LeBron sort of handle it from there.

Now about Westbrook’s team when Westbrook carried that team to the 6th seed in the playoffs. This was right after Kevin Durant left for the Warriors and the whole league knew that Russell Westbrook would be unleashed. He also had his core of Steven Adamss, Andre Roberson, Nick Collisson, the Thunder legend, players that he has been with for 3+ years, guys who had been there the season before like Enes Kanter, Kyle Singular, Anthony Morrow for 1-2 seasons. At least a core of 6 role players had been with Russ before, making it easier for Russ to sort of also do his thing.

This team that the Warriors are now is completely different. It’s not a team that has been together for years, it’s a team with 11 new players, and one of those players that was there before in Klay Thompson is out. Even their best role players in Alec Burcs and Willie-Cauley Stein are still out. It’s not the time to start panic on Stephen Curry or bash the Warriors. The Warriors will figure things out and as a result, Stephen Curry will also thrive. He might just do it against the Pelicans tonight. But what do you think?
